Personal, social and career development (PSCD)

Personal, Social and Career Development (PSCD) is a core subject within the Maltese education system, including all secondary schools. It gives students a welcoming space to explore who they are, how they connect with others and what they hope to achieve in the future, supporting their personal growth and overall development.

PSCD lessons revolve around three areas: personal, social and career. In the personal area, students learn to manage their emotions, build healthy self-esteem, cope with stress and make smart lifestyle choices, including staying safe online. In the social area, they explore how to build respectful relationships and develop skills like teamwork, empathy and assertive communication. In the career area, students discover their strengths, set goals and pick up practical skills such as writing a CV. These are just some of the topics covered.

Lessons are lively and student-centred, with activities, discussions, quizzes and role-plays. The PSCD Department also runs initiatives such as wellbeing and online safety campaigns and Pink October. Students also go on outings, like mindfulness activities and trips to see drama performances that tie in with what they learn in class.

Ultimately, PSCD helps students grow into thoughtful, responsible young people who are ready to face the challenges of growing up with confidence, while developing the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to make informed decisions and contribute positively to society.
